Of the 1,480 F/A-18 Hornets built, the vast majority were delivered to the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Export sales only accounted for a small percentage of the total number produced. Three European nations ordered and to this day still operate several of this highly-maneuverable multi-role combat aircraft: Finland, Switzerland, and Spain. The Spanish Air Force took delivery of 60 F-18A single-seaters between 1985 and 1990, adding 24 ex-US Navy aircraft in the late 1990’s. These have been continuously updated and are used for both the all-weather interceptor and ground attack roles. In Spain, the EF-18 as it is called internationally (the "E" standing for "España", Spain) is locally designated by Spain as the C.15 (the "C" standing for "Caza", fighter). Based at Torrejón, outside of Madrid, the 12th Wing’s emblem features a cat, a common nickname for people from Madrid ("gatos"). The unit’s motto "No le busques los tres pies al gato" ("Don't look for the cat's three feet") is a phrase from Miguel de Cervantes’ "Don Quijote" novel means to not overthink situations, and symbolizes the unit’s no-nonsense and direct approach in combat.
