The aircraft of the Elmendorf, Alaska-based 517th Airlift Squadron are operated in association with the 144th Squadron of the state’s Air National Guard unit. One of the eight C‑17s carries the name "Spirit of the Sourdoughs" as a tribute to Alaska’s early history and heritage. In Alaska, "sourdough" has long been a nickname for hardened residents dating back to the gold‑rush era. This Globemaster transport was named to honor the achievements of those early Alaskan pioneers.
